(Festival of The Day of the Dead) English Version
Wat Lao Buddhist Temple of North Philadelphia’s residing monks and committee members, alongside with our wonderful volunteers would like to announce our upcoming celebration for Boun Haw Khao Padapdin.
Word for word this loosely translates to “Decorating the earth (dirt) with wrapped rice” and the celebration is the equivalent of “The Day of the Dead” celebrated in other cultures. Boun Haw Khao Padapdin is another very important day in our buddhist calendar!
This is one of the two festivals observed during Buddhist Lent and is a festival dedicated to the spirits that have passed. This festival is to show respect, not only for your own ancestors that have passed but to other spirits that have no family or their families may not dedicate merit to them. This festival is also a time to show respect to ‘Mae Thaulanii’, Mother Earth.

We will start by creating/ putting together Money Trees (Thon Kara Pik) to honor the souls of our dearly departed. Please feel free to join and create one for your loved ones that have passed.
Sunday September 12th 2021
We begin the ceremonies and prayers to commemorate this event!
09:30 AM Please feel free to join us and benign to prepare for the ceremony
10:30 AM - Prayers, meditation and receiving of blessings
11:00 am - Alms- giving ceremony (Thuk baht), Donations of food presented/served to Monks
Please remember, if you are not feeling well or have a fever, please consider staying home. Regardless of vaccination status, we also ask that you please wear a mask, as a way to protect our community members.
